I would like to congratulate Sarah-Louise on her appointment as Director of MarRI-UK and wish her all the very best for her maternity leave and I am delighted to take on the role as Interim Director for the next 12 months. I look forward to working with all of you, as we collaborate together to accelerate the delivery of world leading research and innovation needed by the maritime industry, an industry crucial to the success of the UK\u2019s international trade and global power projection.This year has been busy and exciting for MarRI-UK, our membership research programme continues to be developed and we are busy in preparation for our MarRI-UK Event that shall take place at London International Shipping Week in September. University of Exeter Joins MarRI-UK<\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/div>\n

The University of Exeter joined MarRI-UK as a Tier 1 University Member to help steer the MarRI-UK research agenda and direction.<\/p>\n

The University of Exeter established the Centre for Future Clean Mobility<\/a> in 2021 to drive innovation in clean powertrains for various sectors including that of the Maritime Sector. The Centre is at the forefront of global research into clean maritime propulsion solutions and has been working with industry to design and fabricate a zero-emission powertrain demonstrator, funded through the CMDC (Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition).<\/p>\n

Professor Christopher Smith, Director of Exeter’s Centre for Future Clean Mobility said \u201cAs Director of Centre for Future Clean Mobility at University of Exeter, we are delighted to become members of this strategic Maritime Network and look forward to collaborating with other members in MaRI-UK to enhance the UK\u2019s research and development capabilities in Clean propulsion facing Maritime\u201d<\/p>\n

Over the last few years MarRI-UK has managed 23 projects over three separate funding calls. Many of these projects have now been completed and the results can be found on the MarRI-UK Website<\/a>.Here are a few highlights from the last couple of months:<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Applying machine learning (ML) for automated monitoring nearshore bathymetry led by University of Liverpool<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
<\/div>\n

MarRI-UK and the University of Liverpool are pleased to announce the completion of the “Applying machine learning (ML) for automated monitoring nearshore bathymetry” project. Through a nexus of satellite, radar and sensor data, University of Liverpool have managed to demonstrate that their Eigneshores product can help automate the monitoring of nearshore bathymetry, which shall allow for strategic interventions by port authorities on whether they need to dredge of recharge the nearshore.<\/p>\n

Advanced Zero Emissions Ammonia Engines for Future Marine Applications led by University of Nottingham<\/strong><\/strong><\/div>\n

MarRI-UK is excited to announce the completion of the “Advanced Zero Emissions Ammonia Engines for Future Marine Applications” project led by the University of Nottingham. This experimental work successfully demonstrated the basic feasibility of using ammonia as a main fuel for both spark and jet ignition concepts, with operation at up to 100% ammonia fuelling viable at medium engine loads and above in a fully warm engine<\/p>\n

London International Shipping Week \u2013 11th<\/sup> \u2013 15th<\/sup> September 2023<\/p>\n

We are excited to announce that MarRI-UK will be attending and holding an event at the London International Shipping Week<\/a>. The date, time and venue will be confirmed in the near future. Keep an eye out for our event in the LISW23 Calendar<\/a>.<\/p>\n

At the event we will invite industry members to disseminate their findings and developments from recent projects that have been funded by the Department of Transport (DfT) through MarRI-UK as well as updates on MarRI-UK future activity and direction. We would like to see you all there to share the work we have been doing over the last 12 months.<\/p>\n
