{"id":244,"date":"2021-12-09T12:50:24","date_gmt":"2021-12-09T12:50:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marri-uk.org\/?p=244"},"modified":"2023-11-30T17:50:28","modified_gmt":"2023-11-30T17:50:28","slug":"flow-batteries-for-marine-application-flo-mar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marri-uk.org\/index.php\/2021\/12\/09\/flow-batteries-for-marine-application-flo-mar\/","title":{"rendered":"Flow Batteries for Marine Application (Flo-Mar)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinesoutheast.co.uk\/ongoing_projects\/?link=collection.php&amp;id=435\"><strong>Flow Batteries for Marine Application (FLO-MAR)<\/strong><\/a> led by <strong>Marine South East<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"blob:https:\/\/marri-uk.org\/02a92bf4-0b87-4143-9db2-d5c3d9999c58\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aimed to confirm the feasibility of using flow batteries for onboard energy storage, and to de-risk the further development and demonstration of a pilot flow battery, Marine South East compared vessel characteristics and performance for the different flow battery types against lithium-ion, and identified which vessel types and duty cycles are particularly attractive for the various battery types.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A concept design of the most suitable vessel type was developed, that consists of a concept general arrangement drawing, concept of operation profile and a risk register.&nbsp; This shows how a flow battery could be incorporated into an existing vessel design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The environmental advantages of flow battery include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Flow batteries allow short-service vessels to operate with zero emissions, in the longer term, they could become viable for deep sea electric ships.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No \u2018high risks\u2019 associated with the placement of a flow battery on the study vessel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A flow battery vessel produces no local emissions of CO2, particulates, SOx or NOx.Electrification of the reference vessel saves 223T CO2 and 731Kg NOx per annum.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the following conclusions were drawn:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Weight and stability changes are acceptable for short range vessels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electrical propulsion system can be of a conventional arrangement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Operating speeds can be similar to conventional craft.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weight increases can be reduced by the use of super-capacitors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The operation of a flow-battery vessel requires effective, efficient, and regular replenishment to maintain service schedules.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emerging organic electrolytes may replace vanadium based systems, offering improved energy density, reduced environmental impacts and reduced costs.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Flow Batteries for Marine Application (FLO-MAR) led by Marine South East Aimed to confirm the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[14],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-244","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-projects"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/marri-uk.org\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/244","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/marri-uk.org\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/marri-uk.org\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/marri-uk.org\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/marri-uk.org\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=244"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/marri-uk.org\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/244\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":245,"href":"https:\/\/marri-uk.org\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/244\/revisions\/245"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/marri-uk.org\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=244"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/marri-uk.org\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=244"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/marri-uk.org\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=244"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
