14:00 – 15:00, 10th December 2024, Online webinar
Join MarRI-UK’s second webinar where we invite industry leaders to discuss nuclear propulsions’ place within the maritime sector.
The webinar will be chaired by Professor John Hudson , Strategic Advisor to MarRI-UK.
Background
The global shipping industry is one of the largest greenhouse gas emitters globally, if the industry were a country, it would rank as the sixth largest emitter. With increasing attention being given to greenhouse gas emissions, nuclear power is a potential solution for merchant ships propulsion. International navies have a good safety record with over 500 nuclear propelled warships and submarines built over the last 60 years. A recent study estimated that if around 7,000 of the worlds largest ships were propelled using nuclear power, carbon missions for the entire merchant shipping industry would halve.
This webinar aims to bring attendees up to date with the latest thinking on potential reactor plant solutions suitable for ship propulsion plant, the challenges associated with regulation and safe operation and consideration of some of the potential obstacles to more widespread adoption.
We are fortunate to have two very knowledgeable speakers to present at the webinar:
Jez Sims, Principle Nuclear & Submarine Technology Specialist from Lloyd’s Register who will update us on a recent study into the regulatory considerations that would be required to ensure the safe operation nuclear propelled containerships.
CORE POWER who will brief us on new developments in reactor technology and their application for marine propulsion.
