  • (13/01) The Science, Innovation and Technology Secretary made a written statement announcing the publication of the AI Opportunities Action Plan and the Government response. The Plan proposes 50 recommendations ‘reflecting the scale and pace required to strengthen the foundations of the UK’s AI ecosystem.’ To deliver on these recommendations, the Government is taking action including: the creation of AI Growth Zones; expanding sovereign AI compute capacity by at least 20 times by 2030, with the Compute Strategy set to be published in Spring; creating a new AI Energy Council; and the launch of a new dedicated team ‘with a mandate to strengthen the UK’s sovereign AI capabilities by supporting our national champions at the frontier of AI.’ Announcing the publication, the PM delivered a speech at UCL in which he stressed that the Government will “put the full weight of the British State” behind the development in AI, as the risk of being left behind developing the technology is far greater than the risks the technology itself poses. He also stated that Matt Clifford, the author of the Review, will be brought into Number 10 to help with the implementation of recommendations, adding that Nobel Prize Winner Demis Hassabis will be providing his advice to the Government.
