  • (30/01) MOD announced that MinDPI had opened the Submarine Availability Support Hub (SASH) in Bristol, which will ‘improve submarine delivery, boost UK engineering capabilities, and help maintain the continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent.’ The facility will also ‘enable the Defence Nuclear Enterprise – the partnership of organisations that operate, maintain, renew and sustain the UK’s nuclear deterrent – to work together more seamlessly with Babcock and other contractors to drive better submarine availability and delivery’, which will ‘be achieved through utilising cutting-edge digital and learning tools and drawing together technical and engineering expertise in a collaborative space.’ The activity taking place within SASH also ‘enables waterfront operations at Clyde and Devonport by improving the content, planning and preparation for maintenance periods as part of an integrated Naval Nuclear business to support submarine availability.’
  • (29/01) MOD posted the speech delivered by SofS at the ADS Annual Dinner.
  • (29/01) The NAOpublished a report that showed that the ‘cyber threat to UK government is severe and advancing quickly’.
  • (29/01) UKDSE published UK security export statistics for 2023.
  • (29/01) CX delivered a speech on growth, in which she set out three key elements to the Government’s strategy – Stability, Reform and Investment – and detailed a number of new regional investments and new policy positions to drive growth:
  • On Tradeshe announced HMG will build on the special relationship with the USA, work to reset the UK’s relationship with the EU, with the Business Secretary shortly due to visit India to restart talks on a trade treaty.
  • On Regulation and Planning she announced that HMG will publish an action plan to make regulation work better for the economy in March, will reduce environmental requirements placed on developers when they pay into a Nature Restoration Fund and will make it easier to build on land around railway stations.
  • She called Net Zero, the “industrial opportunity” of the century”, announcing that HMG will publish a refreshed Carbon Budget Delivery Plan later this year and will designate new marine protected areas to help deliver 16GW of offshore wind.
  • She made a number of announcements aimed at Regional Development including that HMG will move ahead with the Lower Thames Crossing, £65m of investment for Connected Kerb’s electric vehicle charging network, £28m investment for Cornish Metals to provide raw materials for solar panels and wind turbines, support for the redevelopment of the Old Trafford stadium, support to reopen Doncaster Sheffield Airport, and a large package of support to help develop the Cambridge-Oxford Growth Corridor into “Europe’s Silicon Valley” (including the appointment of Lord Vallance as the Ox-Cam Growth Corridor Champion).
  • (26/01) It has been reported that the date to raise defence spending to 2.5% has been delayed to 2032 due to fears that any earlier increase could result in deeper cuts to public services.
