A 10% tariff has been imposed on the UK, with this to come into effect on 5 April. 10% has been labelled the ‘baseline’ tariff and was the lowest announced. A 20% tariff has been imposed on the EU; 54% on China; 24% on Japan; and 10% on Australia and New Zealand. The 25% tariff on automotives has also come into effect. The Business and Trade Secretary delivered a statement on the tariffs, in which he announced the launch of a request for input on “the implications for British businesses of possible retaliatory action”, seeking the views of UK stakeholders on “products that could potentially be included in any UK tariff response.” He insisted this was “a formal step, necessary for us to keep all options on the table” and reiterated the need to “keep calm and remain clear eyed on what is in our national interest” as negotiations on an economic agreement with the USA continue. No10 also posted comments from the PM, in which he said the UK was ‘prepared’, but that ‘nobody wins in a trade war’. He also said that the intention was to secure a deal with the USA but ‘nothing is off the table’, and confirmed he had instructed officials to go ‘further and faster on the changes I believe will make our economy stronger and more resilient.’
